Discipleship - Sunday Morning Programs

Sunday Morning Adult Education Classes
All classes meet at 10:30 a.m.
Sunday morning adult education classes are a natural extension of our worship at St. David’s. Adult classes are offered at 10:30 a.m. from September through April, giving everyone a choice of topics to explore. Sunday morning adult education classes meet every Sunday during the program year.

This year, the Sunday morning adult education classes will follow the Workshop Rotation Model schedule that we are using in Sunday School. There will be three “blocks” (two five week blocks followed by a three week block) from September to December with three class offerings during each block. Sunday morning classes meet from 10:30–11:10 a.m., and there will be coffee available in each of the classrooms.

The three classes offered during the first block, September 19-October 17, are:

“Soul River: Philosophies of the Soul”
with the Rev. Dr. Allen Guelzo in Fellowship Hall
Everybody's got soul, right? But what is a soul? Too often we use 'the soul' as a metaphor for emotions or our day-to-day consciousness of being ourselves. But the Bible talks about the soul as almost a particular part of us. Is it this which survives death? And why is it important that our souls be saved from death? All this, with a few detours through modern neuroscience, and we'll be taking a voyage down Soul River.

“Body and Soul: Managing your Finances God’s Way” With the Rev.’s Frank Allen, Tom Pumphrey and Mr. Charles Mann in the Chapel Lower Level
The Bible is packed with wise counsel about every aspect of life, including our financial lives. In fact, Jesus had more to say about money than any other subject. We will talk about the profound impact that money has on your relationship with God and the health of your soul. You will also learn practical solutions for managing your finances – God’s way. Topics of discussion will include Biblical principles for stewardship, spending, giving, saving, investing and debt.

"Creation and the Soul"
With the Rev. Alison Harrity in the Harrison Room
Genesis chapters one, two and beyond speak to the nature of the human creature that God set in the midst of this "good" earth. Come and study different translations of the creation narratives (that's right, there is more than one creation story in Genesis), learn about the giants (Nephelim) that roamed the earth and remember that while Noah and the Ark make nice decorations in the baby's room, everyone else on earth was behaving very badly. There is much to ponder. Come and kick the year off, "in the beginning ... "
