Cradles to Crayons

Posted by Admin User on March 19, 2012 @ 10:27 AM
God's people were at work this weekend at St. David's Episcopal Church.  As part of a pilot program with Cradles 2 Crayons, St. David's Outreach Commission (under the lay leadership of Melissa Biondi & Diane Mayer), hosted the "Warehouse in a Box Event" on March 17 & 18.  Over 50 volunteers sorted countless boxes and bags of donations consisting of children's clothes, toys, books, games, and other essentials.

Did you participate in the event or donate items?  If so, please click on "Post Response" and share your comments.  Check out the photos above to see the action!

I am still so impressed by the willignness of everyone involved to give of their time and belongings to make this such a successful event. It was the volunteers who made this happen and I am grateful to each and everyone of them for their particular effort! And to Diane Mayer, my co-chair, the most important volunteer of the bunch...this would not have been possible without you! To echo Matt's thoughts...God is indeed good!

Proyecto de Agua en la Congregación

Posted by Admin User on January 27, 2012 @ 10:12 AM

In 2010, $3600 from St. David's World Gifts was sent to our partner parish of San Bartolome (St. Bartholomew's) for a potable water project. There was no running water in the rectory or buildings they use for education, although there is a spring on the church property.  With the money we sent, the congregation was able to install a pump, pipes, and a cistern to bring water into the building.  The man in the photo is one of our partner priests, The Rev. Tomas Calel.

With water we are welcomed into Christ's Body, the Church - when we are baptized. How blessed St. David's is to help Rev. Tomas and his amazing congregation. I'm looking forward to meeting Rev. Tomas this June as part of St. David's International "Ambassador" Mission Trip!

Ordination Blessings

Posted by Admin User on January 12, 2012 @ 9:14 AM

Saturday, January 14, is a special and rare day in the life of St. David’s. We are privileged to witness and pray at ordination of our deacon Matt to the priesthood—our Deacon Matt becomes our Father Matt.

More significant than the title change, Matt’s ordination gives us the opportunity to reflect on a wonderful act in which God gives his Spirit in a special and powerful way to those whom God has specially chosen to administer the sacraments for  maintaining the health and life of the congregation.  Using the old fashioned image, the candidate’s hands are consecrated for the purpose of blessing, forgiving, and most important of all, presiding at the Eucharist.  To put it in a more contemporary way, in becoming a priest the candidate has been “set aside” to minister the sacraments  in ways only a priest or a bishop can do.  Ordination produces what is called an ontological change, i.e. change which can never be undone, a change which makes  an indelible mark.  The new priest ‘s character is changed forever.

There are some wonderful customs which may accompany an ordination. For example,  after the service it is proper to ask the new priest for a blessing.  In Europe there is an old saying that a blessing from a new priest is like getting a new pair of shoes. If we think of the poverty in many places, there are people for whom a new pair of shoes is an expensive gift that will last many years.

So we at St. David’s give thanks for Matt our new priest, and pray that he may have a healthy and bountiful ministry among us.

The Rev. Dr. Bill Duffy

Las Posadas

Posted by Admin User on December 29, 2011 @ 5:01 AM

Padre Miguel sent Christmas greetings to all of St. David's along with photos of the traditional celebration of "Las Posadas," which commemorates Joseph and Mary's search for a room.  ("Posada" means "inn" -- some groups from St. David's have stayed at the Posada de don Rodrigo in Antigua).  The celebration goes on each night from Dec. 16 to Dec. 24 with a group procession through the neighborhood that stops at several houses where members of the group ask for a room and are refused, but finally reach a house where they are admitted, and everyone goes inside for prayers and refreshments.  On the last night, a big party is held—the year on Dec. 24 in Chimaltenango at the Rectory.

Spiritual Gifts

Posted by Admin User on December 13, 2011 @ 10:05 AM
There are things that we can do and give to those we love which are more important than the expensive material objects that we many think are more tangible or valuable then spiritual gifts. In mirroring the gifts that Jesus has given us with his life, death, and resurrection, we can give people the gift of our love in the same fashion. While the suggestions listed below many not cost you much money, there are by no means “cheap.” Indeed taking up any one of these practices will not only take time and effort, but will literally change the life of both you and the person you are gifting. Chose one that you would like to do on behalf of someone you love, and write to them to tell them exactly what you are doing for them. This type of gift is exactly the kind that Jesus gave to us. I would like to see the latest video game, toy, or fashion do that!

Ideas for Spiritual Christmas Gifts:

  • Commit to praying for a person for a season or every single day for a year using the Daily Office. Try using the website: http://www.missionstclare.com
  • Commit to praying for someone on special anniversaries and dates such as their birthday, their Baptismal Anniversary, or the Feast of the Saint who shares their name. Perhaps, you can attend a special service on those days such as Morning or Evening Prayer or the Wednesday Eucharist where we celebrate a different Saint every week.
  • One day a month hold an “energy fast” where you do not use any electronics and use the time to re-connect with your family.
  • Adopt a new eco-friendly habit (such as composting, committing to reducing your carbon foot-print, or riding a bike to work) as a gift to the planet, yourself, your (future) children or (future) grandchildren.
  • Start a garden or plant a tree dedicate to the spiritual growth of your child, grandchild, or Godchild.
  • Keep a journal for someone else documenting daily events that you witness or your feelings, prayers, and hopes for them over a year.
  • Using the website http://www.theuniformproject.com/#!diy take the “uniform challenge” by wearing the same 1-6 pieces of clothing for a long period of time (a week, month, year) to save money on “disposable fashion” and to raise money and awareness for a cause. You would be amazed by how many different ways there are to wear just one article of clothing!
  • Make a donation of time, talent or treasure to a cause (like St. David's World Gifts) in someone’s name. This is a gift which helps many.
  • Purchase a spiritual guide or Bible for a friend, Godchild, or young person and go through it together.
  • Take on a new spiritual practice such as centering prayer, meditation, or yoga which will be a gift to yourself as well as those who live and work with you.
  • Write letters once a month to someone who is far away, elderly or very young.
  • Write letters to your politicians to help this and future generations.
  • Create a video montage or photo album to express the joy you feel in sharing moments with them.
  • Take over a chore or responsibility for them for a month or more. Or, take over a duty (such as a yard work or shopping) for someone who can no longer manage those tasks.
  • Learn a new skill or craft such as knitting or paining which you can use to create gifts with meaning.
  • Finally, simply committing to spending real quality time with someone at least once a month or week will be the best gift of all.
Peace!
The Rev. Hillary Raining

Welcome to the New Website

Posted by Admin User on November 22, 2011 @ 8:35 AM

Welcome to our new St. David’s website! We’ve freshened the design, making it simpler for newcomers to follow, and providing us a platform for the future.  We've gotten to this point through the many dedicated hours from the website committee—Susan Smart, Kris Messner, John Spofford, Bret Dunlap and staff member Kathy Marcantonio—who deserve much thanks. There are many new features including this staff blog which gives us an opportunity to stay connected and to share in the conversation about what God is doing at St. David’s.

Communications ministry is all about the website and newsletter, photos and promos and brochures—or is it? We need a good, clear public face and easy to find information. But is communications in a church only about information management?

When the Communications Task Force (now a standing Vestry Commission) first formed, we discussed how we understood our mission and our goals. Why do we do what we do? First of all, this ministry should serve the mission of the church: to know God in Jesus Christ and to make Christ known to others. But how does the Communications ministry do that? by sharing the Good News of what God is doing in St. David’s ministries and improving personal connections within our church and with the community. If we only offer announcements and promos, we might skip the Good News. The Good News is not what St. David’s is doing, but what God is doing here. God is helping feed the hungry, giving hope to the grieving, renewing the lives of the broken, forming and shaping new Christians, young and old, and touching hearts and minds of hundreds each week.

So Communications is more than the tools of the website, our Dove newsletter, or our weekly Enews. Communication ministry is about our relationships in Christ—our personal connections that we can nurture with prayer and staying in touch with each other. These personal relationships are where God the Holy Spirit works and nourishes us. When we pray for each other, gather for worship, or share in learning and ministry, God is at work feeding us and strengthening our community. The website is only a tool in the ministry you share with each other.

So how do you stay connected with your brothers and sisters in Christ? What helps you to feel the most connected to God? Let us know, and keep us in your prayers.

Yours in Christ,

The Rev. Tom Pumphrey
